Kombucha Leather

I think Biodesign is the new future and something we as designers should thrive towards designing more circular, sustainable, and natural bio-based products and materials to tackle environmental challenges by letting our waste become a source.

While studying master at AKV St. Joost Academy of Fine Art and Design I got the chance to expand my skills and knowledge, challenge and broaden my creativity across disciplines where I combined Biodesign to my practice, situated design, and product design. I experimented with leftover Kombucha tea and bacteria to grow a leather-like material. The result was an eco-friendly and sustainable bag and a purse out of biodegradable leather.

The print on the purse and the color dye is from beetroot.
